Schirripa, timely hitting lead Poly Prep past Riverdale

Poly Preps Ciara Schirripa is determined to make up for lost time. The sophomore pitcher is striving for a great year after a stress fracture in her back sidelined her for almost all of her freshman season. Schirripa was solid in aiding the defending NYSAISAA champion Blue Devils to a 5-3 victory over Riverdale in Ivy Prep League softball in Brooklyn on Saturday. Schirripa pitched a complete game while giving up three runs on six hits and striking out seven. I couldnt just come back and give them what I had before, Schirripa said. I had to make sure I was stronger and I am. I had to come and give them 150 percent of what I had. Schirripa, the daughter of former Sopranos star Steve Schirripa, gave up three runs over the first two innings, but was solid the rest of the way. The Blue Devils trailed 3-2 until the bats came to life for a two-out rally in the third inning. With two outs and nobody on, Breanna Sarrubi hit a single to center off Riverdale pitcher Nicole Cornet and then stole s...

Ciara Paczensky, from Dartford, suffers from the genetic condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). She has to wear bandages to protect her from even the slightest contact. Her father Grant Paczensky said: "It affects one in 17,000 children and is quite restricting on the things that Ciara can do. Garefrekes gives Frankfurt the edge at Arsenal

Kerstin Garefrekes struck deep in added time to give 1. FFC Frankfurt a UEFA Women's Champions League semi-final first-leg win at Arsenal LFC. Ciara Grant had earlier cancelled out Ana Maria Crnogorevi's opener in a tightly contested tie, but the home side were left reeling at the final whistle as Garefrekes turned in a Svenja Huth cross at the far post with virtually the last kick. Three-time champions Frankfurt will now look to complete their task in next Saturday's return. Aware that the visitors had lost all their previous away legs this season, Arsenal attacked early, Alex Scott curling an effort into the hands of Desire Schumann, deputising for injured Nadine Angerer, and the goalkeeper also denied Jayne Ludlow after a Stephanie Houghton cross. As well as Angerer, Frankfurt were without Fatmire Bajramaj due to a thigh strain and were having to defend, Ludlow heading an Ellen White centre just off target. Gradually, though, Frankfurt began to take a grip, especially th...

Information Craig's attorneys Morris Reed Sr. and Morris Reed Jr., have not received formal notice from prosecutors of a second trial. "When we do, we'll be ready to go to trial," Reed Sr. said Wednesday. But they were anticipating it. Last month, they filed papers in court waiving her right to a jury trial. That means Judge Robert Pitre of the 24th Judicial District Court, who presided over the December 2010 trial and threw out the conviction "in the interest of justice," would decide the verdict. NU tutors debate strategies to deal with difference in the classroom

Northwestern student tutors and mentors discussed the complexities of working with children from different backrounds at a workshop Tuesday. The Center for Civic Engagement hosted the event, Encountering Differences, at Norris University Center. About 20 students gathered to examine their common obstacles to serving as tutors. SESP senior Kathryn Anderson organized the workshop and said the idea originated from conversations with fellow tutors seeking a forum to discuss their experiences. We needed a space to address the difficulties that arise from difference in background, particularly difference in privilege, Anderson said. Anderson partnered with Melissa Pognon , a program assistant for AmeriCorps, and Yolanda Richards, a project manager at the Chicago Public Schools Office of School Improvement. Pognon and Richards also faciltated the workshop. Pognon and Richards said they wanted to discuss differences in ethnicity, race, sexuality and age, and to have an honest conversation...
