Ciara Torres-Spelliscy: Could Connecticut Be the First to Get Serious About Shareholders Rights Post-Citizens United?

Image
Connecticut may be the mouse that startles the lion. Connecticut is a small state, but it has a strong record of leadership in addressing the trouble posed by money in politics. Now Connecticut may be the first state to take shareholder protections seriously post-Citizens United. After a governor went to jail for corruption charges for accepting gifts from state contractors, Connecticut decided to regain its good name by getting serious about campaign finance reform. The Legislature pushed the reset button by adopting a ground breaking public financing system as well as pay to play restrictions on state contractors in 2005. Also in 2010, it adopted beefed up disclosure requirements, which require political ads to show the top five donors. This small change brings more transparency to the Connecticut elections than exists almost anywhere else in the nation, including federal elections, which are still hopelessly dark. Now in 2012, Connecticut could break ground again by requiring share...

Dont ruin Olympic dream for Ciara Mageean says Eamonn Coghlan

Irish sporting great Eamonn Coghlan has urged the Olympic Council of Ireland to reverse their decision over Olympic qualification times which could see gifted young athletes like Portaferry's Ciara Mageean denied a place at the London Games later this year. Much to Coghlan's frustration the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) have agreed with the Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI) stating that only those with A standard times will be selected, even though many other countries will be sending athletes with B standard times or worse. Several Ulster stars, including 1500metres specialist Mageean, hurdler Ben Reynolds competing at the World Indoor championships in Istanbul tomorrow and sprinters Jason Smyth and Amy Foster, could miss out on competing in the greatest show on earth in the summer unless they reach the A standard, or the OCI change their minds. Coghlan, who won the 5000m at the 1983 World Championships and ran in three Olympic Games, finishing fourth twice, is myst...

Ciara Blog: A cautionary tale on obesity

Barbara.Ciara@wtkr.com | 757-446-1344 I've always been fascinated by our first ladies. It's the one high-profile position in the Washington beltway that remains somewhat free of political muck raking. First ladies tend to focus on issues we can relate to in everyday life. Follow NewsChannel 3 on Facebook As a child, I remember the adults in my world singing the praises of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and his War on Poverty. I however, was much more interested in Lady Bird Johnson and the "Keep America Beautiful" campaign. Later I took a great interest in first lady Betty Ford when she shared her personal struggle with breast cancer and I preached to the women in my family at weekend gatherings about the importance of annual examinations. Today first lady Michelle Obama is warning the nation of the perils of obesity . How I wish that warning could have resonated with my late friend Roosevelt White. I first came to know Rosey nearly three years ago when my former...
